let me just say one thing that im not sure has been said: bringing "good" out of town bands to Windsor doesnt improve the scene in windsor.
also, something was said about this being the new millenium and facebook is the best way to promote shows... no, facebook/myspace is the lazy mans way to promote. make a flyer, get a shit ton of copies made, go to shows and hand out flyers for your shows.

HAHA!!
nobody is perfect. There's no reason why we should judge people by what they say on the internet when the whole point of this thread is promotion.
Joel is gonna have some good shows, cause whether you like it or not, he's good at it. He prints and hands out flyers himself, and he knows enough bands and promoters to bring in some interesting musicians, who will hopefully inspire some kids. I don't see what the big problem is here.. he's gonna have a variety of metal and heavy music, cause that's what he likes. If you don't like that music, don't hate Joel because of it, just stay away from his shows.
Facebook promotion is obviously a fucking brilliant idea, anyone who disagrees is just looking for a reason to disagree. Yes it's easy, and that's the point, that's why it works soo good. While you're out handing out flyers, people are hitting the convenient "attend" button on their page, which will even go to the length of reminding them when the show comes up. It's double promotion haha. You can even do a search by musical interests in each city and find people who want to go to these shows.
I just don't understand how having extra shows can hurt any scene. It forces people to get off their asses and remember about the music itself.
I've been to a show at the ottawa venue, and despite the size of the room, I gotta say the dudes who run that place have HEART. I would pay twice the ticket price if need be just because of the atmosphere itself. And I gotta say, I love seeing out of town bands come and play, especially when our windsor bands show them up.
the only beef i have with local shows is the SOUND. It's hard to judge windsor bands cause most of the time I can't tell what the fuck they're playing. Nobody mics amps which makes no sense to me. It doesnt matter how loud your amp is when its aimed at the legs of the people up front. All that sound simply dissapears and becomes inaudible even in the 'second row' of the crowd. Mic'ing an amp does not over power anything, it just spreads out the sound and fatness so everyone can hear the actual music. It even makes the vocals fit in with the mix better. The last time I played a show I felt like I should've just stayed home and let the band play without me (bass, drums, and vocals) casue it was such a misrepresentation of my work...
Another thing that bugs me is this crazy shredding that sounds like pure MUD. I wanna hear that shit! For example, the guitar is a midrange instrument, so if you cant hear a guitar, turn up the mids! I'm sick of hearing mid scooped bullshit and overtones covering up sloppy players.

We hope to do a lot more with the place in terms of getting it set up, but money is in short supply so we have to wait it out. As for sound, we plan to carpet those back walls, get a monitor (also a small stage and a bench around the back of the room) and we were thinking about some riser type of boxes people can put their amps on to elevate them a bit. Cuz we obviously can't and don't need to mic drums and amps in this small little place...

yea the sound is pretty damn good in there, I wouldn't worry too much about upgrades especially if you guys are tight on cash.... you can find some cheap monitors at riverside music every once in awhile though, or order some KUSTOM monitors, they're dirt cheap and decent!
